Our seeds are here! It’s hard to believe, but these seeds are going to fill up a half acre pretty soon!
We have a huge assortment of cut flowers and unusual vegetables that we’re planting this year. I’m most excited to plant cupcake zinnias. Because who doesn’t love cupcakes and zinnias? Who? I’d like to know. Because they are probably terrible people.
We’ve ordered our seeds from GeoSeed, Johnny’s, Seed Savers, and Germania Seed.
We’ve also listed a few books that are helping us along this crazy journey. The Flower Farmer, The Organic Farmer’s Business Handbook, and Market Farming Success. Also, not pictured are our dashing good looks and business instincts that are guiding us along the way. (Just kidding, we have no idea what we’re doing, but we’re getting all the education we can get and listening to any advice we receive (notice I said listening, not taking). We’re starting to realize that nobody really knows what they’re doing, but there probably is a right and wrong way to not knowing what you’re doing.)
We scored (for an amazingly cheap price) a used 15’x30′ greenhouse from the Alco that recently closed its doors in Gibson City. We’ll start some seeds in the greenhouse and also have the snapdragons and Cafe Au Lait dahlias in there.
We close on the farm February 17th. It’s hard to believe it’s almost ours. We’re still in the process of selling our current home. We’ve had a lot of showings and open houses, so hopefully someone will purchase it soon.
